CM to Inches Converter
Convert centimeters to inches (cm to in) instantly, with the nearest 1/16 inch
1 centimeter = 0.3937 inches. To convert cm to inches, divide the centimeters by 2.54, because one inch is exactly 2.54 cm.
How to convert centimeters to inches
An inch is defined as exactly 2.54 centimeters, so every centimeter value converts to inches with a single division: inches = centimeters ÷ 2.54. There is no rounding hidden in that number. It has been exact since 1959, which means a result such as 30 cm = 11.811 in is as precise as your original measurement allows. To run the same factor the other way, open the inches to cm converter; the length converter shows a centimeter value in meters, feet and every other unit at once.
The common trap is multiplying by 2.54 instead of dividing. A quick sanity check stops it: an inch is longer than a centimeter, so the number of inches must always be smaller than the number of centimeters, roughly 40% of it. If your answer got bigger, flip the operation.
Rulers and tape measures in the US mark inches in fractions, not decimals, so the converter above also shows the nearest 1/16 inch. For example, 10 cm is 3.937 in, which reads as about 3 15/16 in on a tape.
Step by step
- Take the length in centimeters.
- Divide it by 2.54 (or multiply by 0.393701).
- Round to the precision you need, or to the nearest 1/16 in for a tape measure.

Worked examples
A 30 cm school ruler, a 170 cm adult height and a 2.5 cm button or hinge, worked out step by step.
30 cm ÷ 2.54 = 11.811024 in
= 11.811024 in
170 cm ÷ 2.54 = 66.929134 in
= 66.929134 in
2.5 cm ÷ 2.54 = 0.98425197 in
= 0.98425197 in
How many inches are in a meter?
There are 39.3701 inches in one meter: 100 cm ÷ 2.54 = 39.37007874 in, so a meter runs about 3.37 in longer than a 36 in yard.
Whole meters appear all the time in metric product listings, from fabric and cable sold by the meter to a 2 m door or a 1.5 m sofa. Divide the inches by 12 to split them into feet and inches.
| Meters | Inches | Feet and inches |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 m | 19.69 in | 1 ft 7.69 in |
| 1 m | 39.37 in | 3 ft 3.37 in |
| 1.5 m | 59.06 in | 4 ft 11.06 in |
| 2 m | 78.74 in | 6 ft 6.74 in |
| 2.5 m | 98.43 in | 8 ft 2.43 in |
| 3 m | 118.11 in | 9 ft 10.11 in |
Because 1 ÷ 2.54 equals 50/127, a repeating decimal, no finite number of digits is exact. Rounding to 39.37 in per meter is off by only 0.0002%, about 2 mm per kilometer. That rounded figure has a history: the 1893 Mendenhall Order defined the US yard as 3600/3937 m, which made a meter exactly 39.37 US inches until the 1959 international agreement.
How do I convert cm to inches in Excel or Google Sheets?
With centimeters in cell A2, enter =A2/2.54 to get inches; the reverse formula, =A2*2.54, turns inches back into centimeters.
- Named units in Excel:
=CONVERT(A2,"cm","in")returns the same value, which makes the sheet easier to read later. - Fixed decimals:
=ROUND(A2/2.54,2)returns 66.93 for 170 cm. - Nearest sixteenth:
=MROUND(A2/2.54,1/16)returns 17.6875 for 45 cm. In Excel, the custom number format# ??/16then displays it as 17 11/16. - Feet and inches in one cell:
=INT(A2/30.48)&" ft "&ROUND(MOD(A2/2.54,12),1)&" in"shows 5 ft 6.9 in for 170 cm. - A whole column at once: in Excel 365,
=A2:A100/2.54spills the results down the column, and in Google Sheets=ARRAYFORMULA(A2:A100/2.54)does the same job.
Keep the raw centimeter column and convert in a separate one, so a rounded value never overwrites the original measurement.
How do I turn centimeters into inches and sixteenths?
Divide by 2.54, then multiply the decimal part by 16 and round to a whole number: 45 cm is 17.7165 in, 0.7165 × 16 = 11.46, so the nearest tape mark is 17 11/16 in.
Reduce the fraction when it allows: 8/16 is 1/2 and 12/16 is 3/4. The nearest mark is never more than 1/32 in away, which is 0.79375 mm, so sixteenths are fine enough for furniture, framing and most sewing.
| Centimeters | Decimal inches | Nearest 1/16 in | Rounding gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 cm | 2.7559 in | 2 3/4 in | 0.15 mm |
| 12.5 cm | 4.9213 in | 4 15/16 in | 0.41 mm |
| 45 cm | 17.7165 in | 17 11/16 in | 0.74 mm |
| 90 cm | 35.4331 in | 35 7/16 in | 0.11 mm |
For a rule marked only in eighths, multiply the decimal by 8 instead: 0.7165 × 8 = 5.73, which rounds to 6/8, or 17 3/4 in.

Centimeters vs inches: what is the difference?
Both units measure length and are locked together by an exact factor, but they come from different systems and a ruler divides them in different ways.
| Attribute | Centimeters | Inches |
|---|---|---|
| Symbol | cm | in |
| System | Metric | Imperial / US |
| Defined as | 0.01 m | 0.0254 m (25.4 mm) |
| One unit equals | 0.39370079 in | 2.54 cm |
| What it measures | Length: one hundredth of a meter | Length: one twelfth of a foot |
| Standardized by | BIPM, through the SI definition of the meter | 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement; NIST SP 811 in the US |
| How a ruler divides it | 10 millimeters, read as decimals | Halves, quarters, eighths and sixteenths |
| Where it is used | Everyday lengths in almost every country | Everyday lengths in the US; screens, wheels and pipe sizes worldwide |
| Common confusion | Mixing up cm and mm, a factor of 10 | Reading decimal inches as tape fractions |
4 key differences
- An inch is exactly 2.54 times as long as a centimeter, so the same length always has 60.6% fewer inches than centimeters.
- The centimeter splits decimally into 10 mm, while the inch splits by halving, down to 1/16 or 1/32 in on a US tape, which is why centimeter values rarely land exactly on an inch mark.
- One millimeter, the finest mark on a metric ruler, is 0.03937 in, finer than a 1/16 in mark of 0.0625 in (1.5875 mm).
- The centimeter inherits its definition from the meter, which the SI fixes through the speed of light; the inch has no standard of its own and is simply 25.4 mm.
What is a centimeter, and what is an inch?
A centimeter (cm) is one hundredth of a meter, the SI base unit of length. Since 1983 the meter has been defined by the speed of light: the distance light travels in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second. Centimeters are the everyday small unit across most of the world for body measurements, clothing, furniture and product dimensions.
An inch (in, or ″) is 1/12 of a foot and 1/36 of a yard. In July 1959 the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa agreed on the international yard of exactly 0.9144 m, which fixed the inch at exactly 25.4 mm, or 2.54 cm. Before that, the US and British inches differed by roughly a ten-thousandth of a millimeter.
Who still uses inches?
The US uses inches for almost every everyday length. The rest of the world still meets them in screen sizes, bicycle and car wheels, pipe and hose fittings, and denim sizes. That is why centimeter-to-inch lookups are so common: a product built in metric often has to be described to a buyer who thinks in inches.

What is the quickest way to convert cm to inches in your head?
Take 40% of the centimeter figure and you have the inches to within 1.6%; the three routes below get there in different ways, and the anchors show how to trim the answer.
Three shortcuts that work in your head
- Multiply by 4, then divide by 10. This is the same as × 0.4. It runs about 1.6% high, so 50 cm comes out as 20 in against an exact 19.69 in. Good enough for a quick check in a store.
- Use anchors. 10 cm ≈ 3.94 in (just under 4), 30 cm ≈ 11.81 in (just under a foot), and 100 cm ≈ 39.37 in (just over a yard). Scale from the nearest anchor.
- Halve, then subtract a fifth. Halving gives cm ÷ 2; taking away one fifth of that gives cm × 0.4, the same estimate as above, if you prefer halving to multiplying.
Mistakes to avoid
- Multiplying instead of dividing. Centimeters to inches always makes the number smaller.
- Mixing up cm and mm. A 25 mm part is 2.5 cm, not 25 cm. Divide millimeters by 25.4 to get inches directly.
- Converting area with the length factor. A square centimeter is 1/6.4516 of a square inch, not 1/2.54. Use the area converter for cm² to in².
- Rounding too early. Keep full precision until the last step, especially when you convert several lengths and add them up.
