How to count the days between two dates

The calculator turns each date into a serial day number and subtracts. That standard method counts the start date but not the end date, the same way you would count nights in a hotel: check in on the 1st and leave on the 3rd, and you have stayed 2 nights. When you need the number of calendar days an event covers, including the last one, tick Include the end date to add 1. To go the other way and find the date a set number of days away, use the add days to date calculator; the date calculators section has the rest.

Formula
Days = end date − start date
Add 1 to include the end date. If the end date is earlier than the start date, the result is negative.
  1. Enter the start date. It defaults to today, and the end date defaults to December 31 of this year.
  2. Enter the end date.
  3. Tick Include the end date if both days should count.
  4. Read the four results: total days, weeks and days, weekdays (Monday to Friday), and months and days.

What each result means

  • Days between: the exact count, negative if the end date comes first.
  • Weeks and days: the same count split into whole weeks and a remainder, so 97 days is 13 weeks and 6 days.
  • Weekdays: Mondays to Fridays from the start date up to, but not including, the end date; ticking the box includes the end date too. Public holidays are not excluded.
  • Months and days: whole calendar months stepped from the start date, then the remaining days. A month step from the 31st lands on the last day of a shorter month, so January 31 to March 1, 2026 is 1 month and 1 day.

How do I count the days between two dates in Excel or Google Sheets?

Subtract the dates: =B2-A2 gives the days between a start date in A2 and an end date in B2, and =NETWORKDAYS(A2,B2) counts the weekdays.

Plain subtraction matches this calculator's default, counting the start date but not the end date, so September 25, 2026 to December 25, 2026 gives 91. Add 1, as in =B2-A2+1, to include the end date. =DAYS(B2,A2) returns the same count; note that it takes the end date first.

  • NETWORKDAYS counts both ends. For the same range it gives 66 weekdays, because December 25, 2026 is a Friday; this calculator shows 65 unless you tick Include the end date.
  • Holidays go in an optional range, as in =NETWORKDAYS(A2,B2,H2:H12).
  • Months: =DATEDIF(A2,B2,"M") gives whole months (3 here), and =DATEDIF(A2,B2,"MD") the days left over.

How many days are left in 2026?

From September 25, 2026, there are 97 days until December 31, or 98 if you count September 25 itself. September 25 is day 268 of the year's 365.

2026 is a common year, so the day-of-year number gives a quick check: 365 − 268 = 97. The same span in other units:

  • Weeks: 97 days is 13 weeks and 6 days.
  • Weekdays: 69 from September 25 up to December 31, or 70 counting December 31.
  • Months: 3 months and 6 days.
  • Hours: 2,328 hours, which the hours to minutes converter takes one step further.

Countdowns usually leave today out, while planning how many days you still have to work with usually counts it, which is exactly the choice the Include the end date box makes.

Calendar days vs business days: what is the difference?

The Days between result counts calendar days, and the Weekdays result approximates business days. Deadlines, contracts and delivery estimates use one or the other, and mixing them up can move a date by days or weeks.

4 key differences

  1. 2026 has 365 calendar days but 261 weekdays, and 250 working days once the 11 US federal holidays, all observed on weekdays this year, are removed.
  2. Any 28 consecutive days contain exactly 20 weekdays, whatever day of the week they start on.
  3. A short span depends on where it falls: 3 consecutive calendar days can hold 1, 2 or 3 weekdays.
  4. US federal courts count every calendar day in most filing periods under Rule 6(a) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, extending the period only when the last day lands on a weekend or legal holiday.

Exclusive vs inclusive counts

The same date ranges with and without the end date. The difference is always exactly one day, and one weekday if the end date is a Monday to Friday.

Should you include the end date when counting days?

Include it when you count days of attendance or occupancy, and leave it out when you measure elapsed time. Getting this wrong is the most common day-count mistake.

  • Exclude it for elapsed time: nights in a hotel, the age of something in days, time since an event, or an interest period, which usually counts the first day but not the last.
  • Include it for days of attendance or occupancy: a festival from Friday to Sunday lasts 3 days, a vacation from June 1 to June 7 is 7 days of leave, and a course that runs from the 1st to the 30th covers 30 days.
  • Follow the rule in the document for legal and HR deadlines. US federal courts, for example, exclude the day of the triggering event under Rule 6(a) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and then count every day.

Example: the Schengen 90-day rule

Visitors to the Schengen Area may usually stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and both the day of entry and the day of exit count as days of stay. A single trip from June 1 to August 31, 2026 is therefore 92 days inclusive, two days over the limit, even though the plain subtraction gives 91. For several trips, add the inclusive days of each stay within the rolling 180-day window, and confirm with the official rules before you travel.

How many working days are there from September 25 to December 31, 2026?

There are 69 weekdays from September 25 up to December 31, 2026, as the calculator counts them, and 65 working days for a US federal office. The weekday count is a quick guide to working days, but it does not know about holidays. Four US federal holidays fall on weekdays in that span: Columbus Day on Monday, October 12; Veterans Day on Wednesday, November 11; Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26; and Christmas on Friday, December 25. A federal office would therefore have 65 working days in the period. The United States has 11 federal holidays a year, and states, employers and other countries add or swap their own.

Note that the weekday count includes the start date. If your rule starts counting on the next business day, subtract one when the start date is a weekday. To move a date forward by a set number of business days, use the add days to date calculator.

Common uses for a day count

  • HR and payroll: length of service, days worked in a partial pay period, notice and probation periods, and accrued leave.
  • Legal and finance: days until a filing deadline, days late on an invoice, and interest calculated on an actual/365 basis, which divides the exact day count by 365.
  • Projects: sprint lengths, countdowns to a launch and the gap between milestones, in weeks as well as days.
  • Personal: days until a wedding, a holiday or a due date, and how long ago something happened. For a person's age, the age calculator gives years, months and days in one step.

Months have 28 to 31 days, so "3 months" is not a fixed number of days: March 15 to June 15, 2026 is 92 days, while September 25 to December 25, 2026 is 91. To convert a day count into hours or minutes, use the time converter.

Please note: day counts here are pure calendar arithmetic. Contracts, courts and employers may count days their own way or exclude specific holidays, so check the rule that governs your deadline before relying on a figure.

Questions

Days between dates FAQs

Short, exact answers to what people ask most.

How do I calculate the number of days between two dates?

Subtract the start date from the end date. The calculator does this exactly, counting the start date but not the end date unless you tick Include the end date.

Does the day count include the end date?

Not by default. The standard count excludes the end date, so September 25 to September 26 is 1 day; ticking Include the end date adds one, which suits counts of event or leave days.

How many days are there until Christmas 2026 from September 25?

From September 25, 2026 to December 25, 2026 is 91 days, or 13 weeks exactly. Counting both dates gives 92 days.

How many weekdays are in 2026?

2026 has 261 weekdays, Monday to Friday, from January 1 to December 31 inclusive. Public holidays are not subtracted from that figure.

Why is my result negative?

The end date is earlier than the start date. The calculator still shows the size of the gap, with a minus sign on the total, so you can see how many days ago the end date was.

How many days is 3 months?

It depends on the months involved, because they have 28 to 31 days. March 15 to June 15, 2026 is 92 days, while September 25 to December 25, 2026 is 91 days.

How many days until Halloween 2026 from September 25?

From September 25, 2026 to October 31, 2026 is 36 days, or 37 counting both dates. That is 5 weeks and 1 day.

How many days are in 2026?

2026 has 365 days because it is not a leap year; the next leap year, 2028, has 366. From January 1 to December 31, 2026 the calculator shows 364 days, or 365 with the end date included.

How many business days are in September 2026?

September 2026 has 22 weekdays. Labor Day, Monday, September 7, is a federal holiday, so a US federal office has 21 working days that month.

How many days is 6 weeks?

6 weeks is exactly 42 days. Adding it to a date always lands on the same weekday, so Friday, September 25, 2026 plus 42 days is Friday, November 6, 2026.
