Hours to Minutes Converter
Convert hours to minutes (h to min), including decimal hours to h:mm
1 hour = 60 minutes. To convert hours to minutes, multiply the hours by 60, so 2.5 hours = 150 minutes and 1.75 hours = 105 minutes (1 hour 45 minutes).
How to convert hours to minutes
Because every hour holds exactly 60 minutes, multiplying by 60 converts any number of hours to minutes. It works the same for whole and decimal hours: 3 h × 60 = 180 min, and 0.4 h × 60 = 24 min. To go the other way, the minutes to hours converter divides by 60, and the time converter covers days, weeks and years.
The trap is a decimal that looks like a clock time. 2.3 hours is not 2 hours 30 minutes. The .3 is three tenths of an hour, and 0.3 × 60 = 18, so 2.3 h is 2 hours 18 minutes. To write any decimal as hours and minutes, keep the whole number as hours and convert only the decimal part. A timesheet that asks for decimal hours needs the same arithmetic run backwards.
Step by step
- Take the time in hours, whole or decimal.
- Multiply by 60 to get the total minutes.
- For hours and minutes, keep the whole hours and multiply only the decimal part by 60.
- If the minutes still have a decimal, multiply that part by 60 for seconds.

Worked examples
Three cases: a 0.75-hour task on an invoice, a 2.3-hour flight time from a booking site, and an 8-hour working day.
0.75 h × 60 = 45 min
= 45 min
2.3 h × 60 = 138 min
= 138 min
8 h × 60 = 480 min
= 480 min
How do I convert hours to minutes in Excel or Google Sheets?
Use =A2*60 when A2 holds decimal hours, such as 2.3, and =A2*1440 when A2 holds a time or duration such as 2:18, because spreadsheets store time as fractions of a day. Both return 138.
The two cases look alike but behave differently. A plain number like 1.75 is just hours, so multiplying by 60 gives 105. A value typed as 1:45 is stored as 0.072917 of a day, and multiplying by 1,440, the number of minutes in a day, gives the same 105.
- Decimal hours to an h:mm display: =A2/24, then format the cell as [h]:mm, so 1.75 shows as 1:45.
- Whole hours and leftover minutes as text: =INT(A2)&" h "&ROUND(MOD(A2,1)*60,0)&" min" turns 2.3 into 2 h 18 min.
- Hours and minutes in separate cells: =B2*60+C2, with hours in B2 and minutes in C2.
Excel and Google Sheets use the same formulas and the same [h]:mm format code, so these formulas work in either program.
How do you write 1 hour 45 minutes in ISO 8601?
Write it as PT1H45M: ISO 8601 starts a duration with P for period, adds T before the time part, then gives the hours with H and the minutes with M.
The same 105 minutes has several valid spellings. The standard lets a value exceed its usual carry-over point and allows a decimal fraction on the smallest unit, so all of these describe one length of time:
- PT1H45M: hours and minutes
- PT105M: minutes only
- PT1.75H: decimal hours
- PT6300S: seconds only
The T matters. P1M means one month, while PT1M means one minute, because M stands for months before the T and minutes after it; with an average month of 43,829.1 minutes, the two differ by a factor of about 43,829. A time of day is written differently, as 13:45 or 13:45:00, and a UTC time adds Z, as in 13:45Z. To read a Z-stamped time on New York clocks, use the UTC to EST converter.

Hours vs minutes: how do they compare?
Hours and minutes are both non-SI units accepted for use with the SI, and both are fixed multiples of the second. The top rows come from those definitions; the rows below cover notation and everyday use.
| Attribute | Hours | Minutes |
|---|---|---|
| Symbol | h | min |
| System | Accepted with SI | Accepted with SI |
| Defined as | 3,600 s | 60 s |
| One unit equals | 60 min | 0.016666667 h |
| SI symbol pitfalls | h, not hr or hrs | min, not m (m is the meter) |
| ISO 8601 duration letter | H, as in PT8H | M after the T, as in PT45M |
| Range on a 24-hour clock | 00 to 23 | 00 to 59 |
| Common fractions | 0.25 h, 0.5 h, 0.75 h | 15, 30 and 45 min |
| Typical uses | Shifts, payroll, flight times, billing | Meetings, recipes, commutes, call lengths |
4 key differences
- One hour holds exactly 60 minutes, so any decimal hour value times 60 gives the minutes directly.
- Each tenth of an hour is exactly 6 minutes, which is why billing in 0.1 h steps charges in 6-minute blocks.
- In ISO 8601, M after the T means minutes but M before the T means months, so PT3M and P3M are very different durations.
- The SI Brochure writes the hour as h and the minute as min; hr and m are not correct SI symbols for them.

How do you read decimal hours on invoices and pay stubs?
Read the number before the point as hours and multiply the part after it by 60 for minutes, so any decimal hour figure on a bill or pay stub turns into ordinary clock time.
A pay stub that says 37.75 hours means 37 hours 45 minutes, since 0.75 × 60 = 45. A lawyer's invoice line of 0.4 hours means 24 minutes of work. Many professional firms bill in tenths of an hour, where each 0.1 is exactly 6 minutes, so 0.1 to 1.0 hours covers 6 to 60 minutes in 6-minute steps.
Worked example: a freelancer logs 2.35 hours at $80 an hour. The charge is 2.35 × 80 = $188.00, and the time is 2.35 × 60 = 141 minutes, or 2 h 21 min. Reading 2.35 as 2 hours 35 minutes would overstate the time by 14 minutes.
Tenths and quarters at a glance
- 0.1 h = 6 min, 0.2 h = 12 min, 0.3 h = 18 min, 0.4 h = 24 min
- 0.25 h = 15 min, 0.5 h = 30 min, 0.75 h = 45 min
- 0.6 h = 36 min, 0.7 h = 42 min, 0.8 h = 48 min, 0.9 h = 54 min
Everyday durations in minutes
Familiar blocks of time expressed in hours and total minutes. The sleep figure is the adult minimum recommended by the CDC; the full-time year is the 52 × 40-hour figure used in many salary calculations.
| Duration | Hours | Minutes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 hour | 1 h | 60 min |
| A 90-minute film | 1.5 h | 90 min |
| Half a working day | 4 h | 240 min |
| Recommended adult sleep (7 hours or more) | 7 h | 420 min |
| 7.5-hour shift | 7.5 h | 450 min |
| 8-hour workday | 8 h | 480 min |
| 12-hour shift | 12 h | 720 min |
| 1 day | 24 h | 1,440 min |
| 37.5-hour work week | 37.5 h | 2,250 min |
| 40-hour work week | 40 h | 2,400 min |
| 1 week | 168 h | 10,080 min |
| Full-time year (2,080 hours) | 2,080 h | 124,800 min |
How do you split decimal hours into hours, minutes and seconds?
Multiply by 60 for minutes, keep the whole minutes, and multiply the remaining fraction by 60 again for seconds; it is the same step applied twice.
Some decimals do not land on a whole minute. Take 1.2345 hours. Multiply by 60 to get 74.07 minutes, keep the 1 hour and 14 minutes, then multiply the leftover 0.07 minute by 60 to get 4.2 seconds. So 1.2345 h is 1 h 14 min 4.2 s, or about 4,444 seconds in total. For the seconds step, the seconds to minutes converter works in the other direction.
How durations are written
- Decimal hours (1.5 h): payroll, billing and engineering.
- h:mm or h:mm:ss (1:30 or 1:30:00): stopwatches, race results, video lengths.
- ISO 8601 (PT1H30M): software, calendars and data files, where P marks a period and T starts the time part.
A clock time and a duration look alike but are different things. 1:30 on a clock is a moment; 1:30 on a stopwatch is 90 minutes. When the moment is in another time zone, use the time zone converter instead.
Common mistakes with hours and minutes
- Treating the decimal as minutes. 1.5 h is 90 minutes, not 1 h 50 min; 3.2 h is 3 h 12 min, not 3 h 20 min.
- Multiplying h:mm directly. 2:30 is not 230 minutes. Convert the hours (2 × 60 = 120) and add the minutes (30) to get 150.
- Mixing a 24-hour clock time with a duration. 14:00 is 2 p.m., not 14 hours of work.
- Summing durations over 24 hours in a spreadsheet. A normal time format wraps back to 0 after 24 hours; use a duration format such as [h]:mm to show 37:45.
For counts of whole days between two dates, the add days to date calculator is more reliable than converting hours by hand.
