MPH to KM/H Converter
Convert miles per hour to kilometers per hour (mph to kph) instantly
1 mile per hour = 1.609344 kilometers per hour exactly. To convert mph to km/h, multiply the speed by 1.609344, so 60 mph is 96.56 km/h.
How to convert mph to km/h
Both units measure distance per hour, so the hour cancels out and the only thing that changes is the distance. Since the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement, one international mile has been defined as exactly 1,609.344 meters, which is 1.609344 kilometers. That makes the speed factor exact too: every mile per hour is 1.609344 km/h, with no rounding hidden anywhere. The same number drives the km to miles converter for plain distances. To reverse the step, divide with the km/h to mph converter; the speed converter handles every other speed unit.
The trap is the shortcut. Multiplying by 1.6 is fine for a road sign, but it undercounts by about 0.58%. At 70 mph the shortcut gives 112 km/h while the true figure is 112.65 km/h, and over a long engineering or timing calculation that gap adds up. Keep the full 1.609344 whenever the result feeds another calculation.
Step by step
- Take the speed in miles per hour.
- Multiply it by 1.609344.
- Round to the precision you need; whole km/h is plenty for driving.

Worked examples
Three speeds you are likely to meet: a 30 mph town limit, a 65 mph interstate limit and a 100 mph fastball.
30 mph × 1.609344 = 48.28032 km/h
= 48.28032 km/h
65 mph × 1.609344 = 104.60736 km/h
= 104.60736 km/h
100 mph × 1.609344 = 160.9344 km/h
= 160.9344 km/h
Which countries still use miles per hour?
Only two major countries, the United States and the United Kingdom, still sign their roads in miles per hour; a handful of smaller nations and territories, several in the Caribbean, do the same.
Most of the English-speaking world has moved to km/h. Australia changed its road signs in 1974, Canada in 1977 and Ireland in 2005, and in each case the change was made on a set date rather than sign by sign.
Within the mph group the details vary. UK signs give speeds in mph and distances in miles and yards, and the Crown dependencies of the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey use mph too. Puerto Rico, a US territory, posts speed limits in mph but road distances in kilometers.
If you drive from an mph country into a km/h one, remember that the sign rarely shows the unit. A limit that looks like a relaxed 60 is 60 km/h, only 37.28 mph, and a 120 motorway sign is 74.56 mph.
How long does it take to drive 100 km at 60 mph?
About 62 minutes: 60 mph is 96.56 km/h, so 100 km takes 100 ÷ 96.56064 = 1.0356 hours, which is 1 hour 2 minutes 8 seconds.
The method works for any trip that mixes the two systems. Convert the speed to km/h, divide the distance by it to get hours, then turn the decimal hours into minutes with the hours to minutes converter. Converting the distance to miles instead gives the same answer: 100 km is 62.14 miles, and 62.14 ÷ 60 is also 1.0356 hours.
| Distance | At 55 mph | At 65 mph | At 75 mph |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 km | 0:34 | 0:29 | 0:25 |
| 100 km | 1:08 | 0:57 | 0:50 |
| 250 km | 2:49 | 2:23 | 2:04 |
| 500 km | 5:39 | 4:47 | 4:09 |
Times are shown as h:mm of pure driving at a steady speed. Real journeys take longer because of traffic, stops and speed changes, so treat them as best-case figures.

Mph vs km/h: how do the two speed units compare?
Miles per hour and kilometers per hour share the hour and differ only in the distance they count. Symbols, systems and the exact factor are listed first; the rows below show where each unit lives and how drivers meet it.
| Attribute | Miles per hour | Kilometers per hour |
|---|---|---|
| Symbol | mph | km/h |
| System | Imperial / US | Metric |
| Defined as | 0.44704 m/s | 0.2777… m/s |
| One unit equals | 1.609344 km/h | 0.62137119 mph |
| Length of the distance unit | 1,609.344 m (5,280 ft) | 1,000 m |
| Legal basis today | The 1959 six-nation yard and pound agreement, as listed in NIST SP 811 | Kilometer = 1,000 SI meters; the hour is accepted for use with the SI (BIPM) |
| Countries on road signs | The US, the UK and a few others | Nearly every other country, including Canada since 1977 and Ireland since 2005 |
| Acceleration benchmark | 0–60 mph | 0–100 km/h |
| On a US car's speedometer | Large main figures | Small inner ring |
5 key differences
- One mph is exactly 1.609344 km/h, a factor with no rounding because the mile is defined in meters.
- Rounding the factor to 1.6 makes every km/h result 0.58% too low.
- The 85 mph limit on Texas State Highway 130, the highest posted in the US, equals 136.79 km/h.
- A mile is 5,280 feet while a kilometer is 1,000 meters, so one mph is a faster speed than one km/h.
- The UK signs its roads in mph even though most other British measures, such as fuel sold in liters, are metric.
US and UK speed limits in km/h
The United States and the United Kingdom are the main countries that still post road speeds in mph. These are typical limits; states and local authorities set their own, so always follow the signs on the road.

| UK 20 mph zone / Wales default urban limit | 20 mph | 32.19 km/h | 32 km/h |
| US residential street (common) | 25 mph | 40.23 km/h | 40 km/h |
| UK built-up area (street lights) | 30 mph | 48.28 km/h | 48 km/h |
| US urban arterial (common) | 35 mph | 56.33 km/h | 56 km/h |
| US rural two-lane highway (common) | 55 mph | 88.51 km/h | 89 km/h |
| UK single carriageway, cars | 60 mph | 96.56 km/h | 97 km/h |

| UK motorway and dual carriageway, cars | 70 mph | 112.65 km/h | 113 km/h |
| US rural interstate, many western states | 75 mph | 120.70 km/h | 121 km/h |
| Highest posted US limit (Texas SH 130) | 85 mph | 136.79 km/h | 137 km/h |
Mental math: mph to km/h without a calculator
You rarely need six decimal places behind the wheel. These three tricks get you close enough to read a road sign or a speedometer at a glance.
Add 60 percent
Take the mph figure, add half of it, then add another tenth. For 50 mph that is 50 + 25 + 5 = 80 km/h, against an exact 80.47 km/h. The method is the same as multiplying by 1.6, so it always lands slightly low.
Multiply by 8, divide by 5
Because 1.6 = 8/5, you can double three times and then divide by 5. For 45 mph: 45 × 8 = 360, and 360 ÷ 5 = 72 km/h. The exact answer is 72.42 km/h.
Use the Fibonacci pairs
Consecutive Fibonacci numbers have a ratio close to 1.618, which is near the mile-to-kilometer factor. So 5 mph ≈ 8 km/h, 8 ≈ 13, 13 ≈ 21, 21 ≈ 34, 34 ≈ 55, 55 ≈ 89 and 89 ≈ 144. Check one: 55 mph is exactly 88.51 km/h. It is a handy way to remember a whole ladder of speeds at once.
Driving abroad with an mph mindset
Almost every other country signs its roads in kilometers per hour, including Canada, which switched its road signs to metric in 1977, and Ireland, which followed in 2005. If you are used to thinking in mph, it helps to anchor a few speeds you already know by feel:
- Your usual 65 mph highway cruise is 104.6 km/h, so a 100 km/h sign is a little slower than you are used to.
- A 25 mph neighborhood pace is 40.2 km/h, a little faster than the 30 km/h zones that many European cities now use near schools and homes.
- A 75 mph western interstate speed is 120.7 km/h, a touch below the 130 km/h motorway limit in France and Italy.
Most cars sold in the US have a dual-scale speedometer, with mph in large figures and km/h in a smaller inner ring, and most digital dashboards can switch units in the settings menu. A rental car abroad will usually show km/h first. If you also plan fuel stops, the mpg to L/100km converter translates your car's economy into the local format.
Well-known speeds in mph and km/h
A few reference points that make the numbers feel real. Record figures are the published values; the everyday speeds are typical, not exact.
| Speed | mph | km/h |
|---|---|---|
| Usain Bolt's 100 m world record average (9.58 s) | 23.35 mph | 37.58 km/h |
| Brisk road-bike commuting pace | 15.00 mph | 24.14 km/h |
| The 0–60 mph acceleration benchmark | 60.00 mph | 96.56 km/h |
| A 100 mph fastball | 100.00 mph | 160.93 km/h |
| ThrustSSC land speed record (1997) | 763.03 mph | 1,227.99 km/h |
Common mistakes when converting mph
- Treating knots as mph. A knot is a nautical mile per hour, and a nautical mile is 1,852 m, so 1 knot is about 1.1508 mph. Boat and aviation speeds need the knots to mph converter first.
- Rounding limits to neat metric numbers. A 70 mph limit is 112.7 km/h, not 110 km/h. The difference matters if you are writing a travel guide or setting a GPS alert.
- Converting speed but not distance. If you want a journey time, keep speed and distance in the same system. 120 miles at 60 mph takes two hours, and so does 193.1 km at 96.56 km/h, but 120 miles at 96.56 km/h is meaningless.
- Mixing up kph and km/h. They mean the same thing. km/h is the SI style symbol; kph and kmph are informal spellings you will see on some older speedometers and in car ads.
