How to convert grams to ounces
The everyday ounce is the avoirdupois ounce, defined as one sixteenth of the international pound. The pound is exactly 453.59237 g, so one ounce is exactly 28.349523125 g. Dividing grams by that number gives ounces. Because a gram is so small, the answers are small too: a 100 g chocolate bar is only about 3.5 oz. Pounds, kilograms, stone and every other mass unit are on the weight converter.
Two traps catch people. First, gold, silver and platinum are sold by the troy ounce of 31.1034768 g, about 10% heavier, so bullion needs a different factor: choose Troy oz on the Ounce switch above, or see the table below. Second, a fluid ounce measures volume, not weight. A US fluid ounce of water weighs about 29.57 g, but a fluid ounce of flour weighs far less. For recipes measured in cups, use the cups to grams converter or the cups to fluid ounces converter instead.
Step by step
- Take the weight in grams.
- Divide it by 28.349523125 (or multiply by 0.035274).
- Above 16 oz, divide the ounces by 16 to get pounds and ounces.
- Round to one decimal for cooking, two for postage.

Worked examples
A 28 g serving from a nutrition label, a 113 g US stick of butter, and a 500 g bag of pasta.
28 g ÷ 28.34952313 = 0.98767093 oz
= 0.98767093 oz
113 g ÷ 28.34952313 = 3.9859577 oz
= 3.9859577 oz
500 g ÷ 28.34952313 = 17.636981 oz
= 17.636981 oz
Why do nutrition labels say 1 ounce is 28 grams?
US nutrition labels use 28 g for 1 oz because FDA rule 21 CFR 101.9 tells food makers to treat one ounce as 28 g when they declare serving sizes. The true avoirdupois ounce is 28.349523125 g.
The rounding keeps serving sizes tidy, and the error is small: 28 g is 0.9877 oz, about 1.23% short of a full ounce. It only shows when you scale up. Sixteen label ounces add up to 448 g, while a real pound is 453.59 g, a gap of 5.59 g.
The same rule rounds other household measures for labeling: a teaspoon counts as 5 mL, a tablespoon as 15 mL, a fluid ounce as 30 mL and a cup as 240 mL. That is why a label cup is not quite the 236.59 mL cup used by the mL to cups converter.
European labels sidestep the question by stating nutrients per 100 g, as Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 requires. To compare a US and a European label, remember that 100 g is 3.5274 oz.
Is a troy ounce heavier than a regular ounce?
Yes, a troy ounce is 31.1034768 g and a regular (avoirdupois) ounce is 28.349523125 g, so the troy ounce is about 9.71% heavier. A troy ounce of gold therefore reads 1.0971 oz on a kitchen scale.
The surprise comes one step up. A troy pound has only 12 troy ounces, so it weighs 373.24 g, while the everyday pound of 16 ounces weighs 453.59 g. The troy ounce is the bigger ounce, yet the troy pound is the smaller pound.
Both systems share one tiny unit, the grain, fixed at exactly 64.79891 mg, which makes the relationship easy to see:
| Unit | Grains | Grams |
|---|---|---|
| Avoirdupois ounce | 437.5 | 28.3495 |
| Troy ounce | 480 | 31.1035 |
| Troy pound | 5,760 | 373.2417 |
| Avoirdupois pound | 7,000 | 453.5924 |
Precious metals are the main place troy ounces survive. Food, parcels and body weight all use the avoirdupois ounce.
How do I convert grams to ounces in Excel or Google Sheets?
Put the grams in cell A2 and enter =A2/28.349523125; both Excel and Google Sheets also accept =CONVERT(A2,"g","ozm"), where ozm is the avoirdupois ounce.
A few variations cover most spreadsheets:
- Round for a recipe:
=ROUND(A2/28.349523125,1)shows 250 g as 8.8. - Pounds and ounces:
=INT(A2/453.59237)&" lb "&TEXT(MOD(A2/28.349523125,16),"0.0")&" oz"turns 500 g into 1 lb 1.6 oz. - Troy ounces for bullion:
=A2/31.1034768, because CONVERT has no troy ounce code. - Whole ounces for postage:
=CEILING(A2/28.349523125,1)rounds up to the next full ounce, the way letter rates are charged. - Back to grams:
=A2*28.349523125.
Type the full factor rather than 28.35. It costs nothing, and it keeps every cell in step with this converter to the last decimal place, which is what you want in inventory, shipping or nutrition sheets that get added up.

Grams vs ounces: what is the difference?
Grams and ounces both measure mass, yet one is a decimal slice of the kilogram and the other a sixteenth of the pound.
| Attribute | Grams | Ounces |
|---|---|---|
| Symbol | g | oz |
| System | Metric | Imperial / US (avoirdupois) |
| Defined as | 0.001 kg | 28.349523125 g |

| What it measures | Mass | Mass (the avoirdupois ounce); the fluid ounce is a separate unit of volume |
| Standardized by | BIPM, as 1/1,000 of the SI kilogram | 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement; NIST Handbook 44 in the US |
| Where it is used | Food labels, recipes, science and medicine in almost every country | US recipes, US postage and parcel rates, and precious metals (as the troy ounce) |
| Kitchen-scale step | Usually 1 g | Usually 0.1 oz (2.83 g) |
| Easily confused with | Milliliters, which match grams only for water | Fluid ounces and troy ounces |
4 key differences
- A gram is 1/1,000 of a kilogram, while an ounce is 1/16 of a pound, so grams count in tens and ounces in sixteens.
- An ounce holds about 28.35 grams, so the ounce figure for any weight is roughly 28 times smaller than the gram figure.
- The word gram has one meaning worldwide, whereas ounce can mean the avoirdupois ounce, the troy ounce or, loosely, the fluid ounce.
- On the same scale, a 1 g step is only 0.0353 oz, about a third of the usual 0.1 oz step.
Package sizes and kitchen amounts: grams to ounces

Grams to troy ounces for gold and silver
Precious metals are priced per troy ounce (31.1034768 g), not the ounce on a kitchen scale. A 1 oz gold coin contains one troy ounce, which is more than one ordinary ounce. This chart shows common bar and coin weights both ways.
| Grams | Troy ounces | Avoirdupois ounces |
|---|---|---|
| 1 g | 0.0322 troy oz | 0.0353 oz |
| 2.5 g | 0.0804 troy oz | 0.0882 oz |
| 5 g | 0.1608 troy oz | 0.1764 oz |
| 10 g | 0.3215 troy oz | 0.3527 oz |
| 20 g | 0.6430 troy oz | 0.7055 oz |
| 31.1035 g | 1.0000 troy oz | 1.0971 oz |
| 50 g | 1.6075 troy oz | 1.7637 oz |
| 100 g | 3.2151 troy oz | 3.5274 oz |
| 250 g | 8.0377 troy oz | 8.8185 oz |

| 1 kg | 32.1507 troy oz | 35.2740 oz |
How do you convert grams to ounces in your head?
Divide the grams by 28 for a quick answer that reads about 1.2% high, or remember one anchor, 100 g ≈ 3.5 oz (exactly 3.5274 oz), and scale from it: 200 g ≈ 7 oz, 50 g ≈ 1.75 oz, 250 g ≈ 8.8 oz.
How rough shortcuts compare
- Divide by 30: easy, but about 5.5% low. 300 g comes out at 10 oz instead of 10.58 oz.
- Divide by 28: about 1.2% high, good enough for most cooking.
- Multiply by 0.035: about 0.8% low, the closest of the three.
For small amounts such as coffee, yeast or spices, work in grams if you can. A kitchen scale that shows ounces usually steps in 0.1 oz, which is 2.8 g, while grams step in 1 g, so grams are nearly three times more precise. Spoon measures for tiny amounts are covered by the tablespoons to teaspoons converter.
Why do labels, letters and scales show both grams and ounces?
Because US law and US postal rates work in ounces while almost everything else works in grams. The Fair Packaging and Labeling Act requires consumer packages in the US to state their net quantity in both metric and US customary units, so a one-pound package reads 16 oz and 454 g, the pound rounded to the nearest gram.
Postage. US postal rates for letters step up by the ounce, and a First-Class Mail letter can weigh at most 3.5 oz, which is 99.2 g. A letter weighing 28 g is just under 1 oz, while 29 g tips it over and may need extra postage, so weigh close cases carefully.
Scales. Most digital kitchen and postal scales switch between g and oz at the press of a button, and both use the same 28.349523125 g ounce. Jewelry scales may also offer troy ounces (ozt) or pennyweights, so check the unit label before reading a price.
What is a gram?
The gram is one thousandth of the kilogram, the SI base unit of mass. It was originally meant to be the mass of one cubic centimeter of water, which is why 1 mL of water still weighs very nearly 1 g. For body weight and other large amounts, the pounds to kg converter is the better tool.
