Convert kilograms to pounds (kg to lb) instantly and exactly
1 kilogram = 2.20462 pounds (2.2046226218 lb). To convert kg to lbs, multiply the kilograms by 2.20462, or divide them by exactly 0.45359237.
How to convert kilograms to pounds
Since the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement, the pound has been defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. That makes the pound the fixed quantity, and the number of pounds in a kilogram is its reciprocal: 1 ÷ 0.45359237 = 2.2046226218…, a decimal that never ends. For almost every purpose, multiplying by 2.20462 is accurate to about one part in a million, and dividing by 0.45359237 gives the exact answer. The pounds to kg converter applies that exact factor directly, and the weight converter covers grams, ounces, stone and tons.
The trap is the answer's format. A result such as 7.7162 lb is in decimal pounds, not pounds and ounces. The .7162 is a fraction of a pound, so multiply it by 16 to get ounces: 3.5 kg is 7 lb 11.5 oz, not 7 lb 7 oz.
Step by step
- Take the mass in kilograms.
- Multiply it by 2.20462 (or divide by exactly 0.45359237).
- For pounds and ounces, multiply the decimal part of the pounds by 16.
- Round to the precision you need: one decimal for body weight, two for shipping.

Worked examples
Three everyday cases: a 5 kg bag of flour or rice, a 70 kg adult on a bathroom scale, and the 23 kg checked-bag allowance many airlines use.
5 kg ÷ 0.45359237 = 11.023113 lb
= 11.023113 lb
70 kg ÷ 0.45359237 = 154.32358 lb
= 154.32358 lb
23 kg ÷ 0.45359237 = 50.70632 lb
= 50.70632 lb
Why is 1 kg equal to 2.20462 pounds?
One kilogram equals 2.2046226218 lb because the pound is fixed at exactly 0.45359237 kg, and 1 divided by that number is a decimal that never ends. The pound is the defined quantity; 2.20462 is just its reciprocal, rounded.
The fixed value comes from the International Yard and Pound Agreement, which took effect on 1 July 1959 among the United States and five Commonwealth countries. The number 0.45359237 also divides exactly by 7, so the grain, defined as 1/7,000 of a pound, comes out at a clean 64.79891 mg.
The kilogram side changed more recently. On 20 May 2019 the SI stopped relying on the platinum-iridium cylinder kept at the BIPM near Paris and defined the kilogram through the Planck constant, h = 6.62607015 × 10⁻³⁴ J·s. Because the pound is tied to the kilogram, it inherited the new definition automatically, and the 2.20462 factor did not move by a single digit.
How do I convert kg to lbs in Excel or Google Sheets?
With kilograms in cell A2, type =A2/0.45359237 for exact pounds, or use =CONVERT(A2,"kg","lbm"), which works in both Excel and Google Sheets. In CONVERT, lbm is the code for the avoirdupois pound.
- One decimal, for body weight:
=ROUND(A2/0.45359237,1), so 72.5 kg shows as 159.8. - Pounds and ounces:
=INT(A2/0.45359237)&" lb "&ROUND(MOD(A2/0.45359237,1)*16,1)&" oz"turns 3.5 kg into 7 lb 11.5 oz. - Stone and pounds:
=INT(A2/6.35029318)&" st "&ROUND(MOD(A2/0.45359237,14),1)&" lb"gives 11 st 0.3 lb for 70 kg. - Pounds back to kilograms:
=A2*0.45359237, exact with no rounding. - A whole column: enter the formula once in B2 and fill it down, and each row converts its own A cell.
Dividing by 0.45359237 uses the legal definition itself, so the spreadsheet and this converter agree to every decimal place. For small kitchen amounts in grams, the grams to ounces converter is quicker than building a sheet.

Kilograms vs pounds: what is the difference?
The kilogram anchors the whole metric system, while the pound is a customary unit that has been defined through the kilogram since 1959.
| Attribute | Kilograms | Pounds |
|---|---|---|
| Symbol | kg | lb |
| System | Metric (SI base unit) | Imperial / US (avoirdupois) |
| Defined as | 1 kg | 0.45359237 kg |
| One unit equals | 2.2046226 lb | 0.45359237 kg |
| Current definition | Fixed through the Planck constant, h = 6.62607015 × 10⁻³⁴ J·s, since 20 May 2019 | Exactly 0.45359237 kg, since 1 July 1959 |
| Standardized by | BIPM and the General Conference on Weights and Measures (SI Brochure, 9th edition) | International Yard and Pound Agreement; NIST Handbook 44 (US); Weights and Measures Act 1985 (UK) |
| Divides into | 1,000 grams | 16 ounces, or 7,000 grains |
| Where it is used | Legal unit of trade almost everywhere; all science and medicine | Everyday weights in the US; body weight in the UK alongside stone |
| Typical everyday values | 1 L of water weighs about 1 kg; sugar is often sold in 1 kg bags | A block of butter is 1 lb; a US gallon of milk weighs about 8.6 lb |
4 key differences
- The kilogram is an SI base unit defined by a constant of nature, while the pound has no standard of its own and is a fixed fraction of the kilogram.
- A kilogram outweighs a pound about 2.2 times, so the pound figure for any object is the larger number.
- Kilograms split decimally into grams, while pounds split into 16 ounces, which is why a result such as 7.75 lb means 7 lb 12 oz.
- Every country in the 1959 agreement uses the same pound, so a US pound and a British pound weigh exactly the same.

What is the easiest way to convert kg to lbs mentally?
You can convert kilograms to pounds in your head with one reliable trick: double the kilograms, then add a tenth of that result. This is the same as multiplying by 2.2. For 70 kg: 70 × 2 = 140, a tenth of 140 is 14, and 140 + 14 = 154 lb. The exact answer is 154.32 lb, so the shortcut is off by only 0.32 lb.
How accurate is ×2.2?
Multiplying by 2.2 always reads about 0.21% low, because the true factor is 2.20462. That is invisible on a bathroom scale, but it grows with the number: 1,000 kg becomes 2,200 lb with the shortcut and 2,204.62 lb in reality, a gap of 4.62 lb. Simply doubling, which some people do as a rough guess, is about 9.3% low and should be avoided for anything that matters, such as medication, freight or aircraft loading.
A quick check in the other direction
To sanity-check a result, halve the pounds and take away 10%: 154 lb ÷ 2 = 77, and 77 − 7.7 = 69.3 kg, close to the 70 kg you started with.
Shortcut versus exact: how far off is the mental math?
The “double and add 10%” method (×2.2) compared with plain doubling (×2) and the exact conversion. Positive errors mean the shortcut reads too high, negative too low.
| Kilograms | Exact pounds | ×2.2 shortcut | Error | Doubled (×2) | Error |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 kg | 22.05 lb | 22 lb | −0.05 lb | 20 lb | −2.05 lb |
| 50 kg | 110.23 lb | 110 lb | −0.23 lb | 100 lb | −10.23 lb |
| 70 kg | 154.32 lb | 154 lb | −0.32 lb | 140 lb | −14.32 lb |
| 90 kg | 198.42 lb | 198 lb | −0.42 lb | 180 lb | −18.42 lb |
| 120 kg | 264.55 lb | 264 lb | −0.55 lb | 240 lb | −24.55 lb |
| 1,000 kg | 2,204.62 lb | 2,200 lb | −4.62 lb | 2,000 lb | −204.62 lb |
Gym weights and luggage limits: kg to lbs
Metric gym equipment and airline allowances are the other everyday reasons to convert. Note that a US 45 lb plate is not the same as a 20 kg plate: 45 lb is 20.41 kg. Pounds of force on training machines are covered by the kgf to newtons converter.
| Kilograms | Pounds | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|
| 1.25 kg | 2.76 lb | Smallest common metric change plate |
| 2.5 kg | 5.51 lb | Small metric plate |
| 5 kg | 11.02 lb | Metric plate or kettlebell |
| 10 kg | 22.05 lb | Metric plate |
| 15 kg | 33.07 lb | Women's Olympic barbell |
| 16 kg | 35.27 lb | Standard kettlebell size |
| 20 kg | 44.09 lb | Men's Olympic barbell |
| 23 kg | 50.71 lb | Common checked-bag limit on many airlines |
| 25 kg | 55.12 lb | Large metric bumper plate; bag of cement or feed |
| 32 kg | 70.55 lb | Common maximum for a single checked bag |
What are the most common kg to lbs mistakes?
The classic slips are reading decimal pounds as ounces, multiplying by 0.45 instead of 2.2, and rounding the factor before multiplying. Each one is easy to catch once you know what to look for:
- Reading decimal pounds as ounces. 10.5 lb is 10 lb 8 oz, not 10 lb 5 oz.
- Multiplying by 0.45 instead of 2.2. 0.45 is the factor for pounds to kilograms. If a 70 kg person comes out at 31.5 “pounds”, the conversion went the wrong way.
- Rounding too early. Convert first and round at the end. Rounding 2.20462 to 2 before multiplying introduces a 9% error.
- Mixing up stone and pounds. 11 st 4 lb is 158 lb, not 11.4 stone. Convert stone to pounds (×14), add the loose pounds, then work in pounds.
- Writing “lbs” as the symbol. The official symbol is lb in both singular and plural, although “lbs” is common and widely understood.
The two units in brief
The kilogram is the SI base unit of mass and the legal unit of trade in almost every country. The pound (symbol lb) is the avoirdupois pound used in the United States and, alongside the kilogram, in the UK. It divides into 16 ounces, and 14 pounds make a stone.
