How to convert acres to hectares
An acre is exactly 43,560 square feet. Each square foot is 0.3048 m × 0.3048 m = 0.09290304 m², so an acre is 43,560 × 0.09290304 = 4,046.8564224 m². A hectare is 10,000 m², so dividing gives 0.40468564224 ha per acre. Because both units are areas, the squared foot factor is already built into that number; you never square it again. To go from hectares back to acres, divide by the same number, or let the area converter do it while it also shows square feet, square meters and square miles.
Going the other way, one hectare is about 2.47105 acres. A common slip is to treat hectares and acres as roughly equal. They are not: a hectare is almost two and a half acres, so the number of hectares is always well under half the number of acres. For smaller plots measured in square feet, try the square feet to square meters converter.
You meet this conversion whenever land crosses a border: comparing a US farm listing with European or Canadian prices, reading forestry or crop-yield reports quoted per hectare, or checking a planning document that gives site areas in hectares. Yields and prices per area convert the opposite way to the area itself, so a figure per hectare is about 2.47 times the same figure per acre.
Step by step
- Take the land area in acres.
- Multiply by 0.40468564224 (0.4047 is fine for most uses).
- Round to two or three decimals for property records.

How many square meters are in an acre?
An acre is exactly 4,046.8564224 square meters, about 4,046.86 m², which is a little over 40% of a hectare.
Laid out as a square, an acre measures about 63.61 m (208.71 ft) on each side. The traditional shape is long and thin instead: one chain by one furlong, which works out to 20.1168 m by 201.168 m in metric.
| Shape | Meters | Feet | Acres |
|---|---|---|---|
| Square acre | 63.61 × 63.61 m | 208.71 × 208.71 ft | 1 ac |
| Chain × furlong | 20.1168 × 201.168 m | 66 × 660 ft | 1 ac |
| Hectare | 100 × 100 m | 328.08 × 328.08 ft | 2.4711 ac |
| Soccer pitch | 105 × 68 m | 344.5 × 223.1 ft | 1.7643 ac |
A 105 × 68 m soccer pitch, the size FIFA's stadium guidelines recommend, covers 7,140 m², or 0.714 ha. For the square-meter figure in square feet, the square meters to square feet converter takes over.
How do I convert acres to hectares in Excel or Google Sheets?
Put the acres in A2 and enter =A2*0.40468564224; the result is exact hectares, and =A2/0.40468564224 converts hectares back to acres.
- Named units in Excel:
=CONVERT(A2,"uk_acre","ha")uses the international acre, while "us_acre" selects the slightly larger US survey acre found in old records. - Rounded for a deed or listing:
=ROUND(A2*0.40468564224,4)shows 160 acres as 64.7497 ha. - From a plot measured in feet:
=A2*B2/43560gives acres from length and width, and=A2*B2*0.09290304/10000gives hectares directly. - Square meters instead:
=A2*4046.8564224returns square meters, handy when a plan quotes both units.
Keep the full factor inside the sheet rather than a rounded 0.4. Across a 2,000-acre farm, the shortcut drops 9.37 ha, enough to skew a price or a yield per hectare. Set the display format to a fixed number of decimals instead, so the stored value keeps full precision while the sheet still looks tidy.
How do you convert a price per acre to a price per hectare?
Multiply the price per acre by 2.47105, because one hectare holds 2.47105 acres: $5,000 per acre is $12,355.27 per hectare.
The same rule covers every per-area rate used in farming and land valuation, from seed and fertilizer to rent:
- Seeding rates: 32,000 seeds per acre is 79,074 seeds per hectare.
- Fertilizer rates: pounds per acre need both conversions. 1 lb/acre = 1.12085 kg/ha, so 100 lb/acre is 112.09 kg/ha.
- Rent: $250 per acre per year is $617.76 per hectare per year.
- Price per square meter: $12,355.27 per hectare is $1.24 per m², since a hectare is 10,000 m².
Going the other way, divide a per-hectare figure by the same number. For the pound-to-kilogram step on its own, the pounds to kilograms converter gives the exact factor.

Acres vs hectares: what is the difference?
Both units measure land, but the acre comes from English field measures and the hectare from the metric are, and a hectare is almost two and a half times larger.
| Attribute | Acres | Hectares |
|---|---|---|
| Symbol | ac | ha |
| System | Imperial / US | Metric |
| Defined as | 43,560 ft² (4,046.8564224 m²) | 10,000 m² |
| One unit equals | 0.40468564 ha | 2.4710538 ac |
| Shape of one unit | Any shape; traditionally 1 chain × 1 furlong (66 × 660 ft) | Any shape; conveniently a 100 × 100 m square |
| Official status | US customary unit listed in NIST Handbook 44 | Non-SI unit accepted for use with the SI (BIPM) |
| Where it is used | US land, farm and property records; UK property listings | Farmland, forestry and planning in most countries |
| Round-number benchmarks | 40 ac (quarter-quarter section), 640 ac (square mile) | 100 ha = 1 km² |
4 key differences
- A hectare is 2.4710538 acres, so any piece of land has about 2.47 times as many acres as hectares.
- A hectare is exactly 100 × 100 m, while a square acre has awkward sides of about 63.61 m (208.71 ft).
- It takes 100 hectares to make 1 km², but 640 acres to make 1 square mile.
- The acre is defined through the international foot (43,560 ft²), and the hectare through the meter (10,000 m²).
What is an acre, and what is a hectare?
The acre is a medieval English unit, traditionally the land a team of oxen could plow in a day. It was standardized as one chain by one furlong: 66 ft × 660 ft = 43,560 ft². An acre does not have to be that shape; any area of 43,560 ft² is an acre, whether square (about 208.7 ft per side) or long and thin. It is still the main land unit in the US, and is used for property in the UK, Canada and Australia alongside hectares.
The hectare (ha) is the metric land unit: a square 100 m on each side, or 10,000 m². The name comes from hecto (100) and are, an older metric unit of 100 m². The hectare is not an SI unit, but the SI accepts it for use with SI units, and it is the standard for farmland, forestry and planning in most of the world.

US land survey units in hectares
Most of the US west of the original colonies is divided by the Public Land Survey System into townships of 36 square-mile sections. That is where round numbers like 40, 160 and 640 acres come from.
| Unit | Acres | Hectares | Square kilometers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quarter-quarter section (“40 acres”) | 40 ac | 16.19 ha | 0.1619 km² |
| Quarter section (homestead) | 160 ac | 64.75 ha | 0.6475 km² |
| Section (1 square mile) | 640 ac | 259 ha | 2.59 km² |
| Township (6 × 6 miles) | 23,040 ac | 9,323.96 ha | 93.2396 km² |
Shortcuts, survey acres and common mistakes
- Acres × 0.4 ≈ hectares. The estimate runs about 1.2% low; 50 ac → 20 ha (exact: 20.23 ha).
- Hectares × 2.5 ≈ acres. About 1.2% high; 10 ha → 25 ac (exact: 24.71 ac).
- Don't mix up hectares and square kilometers. 1 km² = 100 ha = about 247.1 acres.
- Don't use the length factor. Acres are areas; there is no linear “acre”, so feet-to-meters factors never apply directly.
The US survey acre
Older US land records sometimes used an acre based on the US survey foot rather than the international foot. That survey acre is about 4,046.8726 m², roughly 4 parts per million larger, a difference of about 162 cm² per acre. It only matters for very large surveys, and the survey foot was retired at the end of 2022. For distances along a property line, the feet to meters converter applies.
