Square Feet to Square Meters Converter
Convert square feet to square meters (sq ft to m²) for any floor area
1 square foot = 0.09290304 square meters exactly. To convert sq ft to m², multiply the square feet by 0.09290304, or divide by 10.7639.
How to convert square feet to square meters
A square foot is a square 1 ft on each side. Since 1 ft = 0.3048 m, its area is 0.3048 m × 0.3048 m = 0.09290304 m². That squared factor is the whole conversion: multiply square feet by 0.09290304 and you have square meters, exactly. The square meters to square feet converter divides by the same number, and the area converter lists square inches, hectares and every other unit.
The trap is using the length factor. Multiplying square feet by 0.3048 gives an answer more than three times too big, because it converts only one of the two dimensions. The same applies in reverse: 1 m² is 10.7639 ft², not 3.28 ft². If you have a room's length and width in feet, you can either multiply them and convert the area here, or convert each side with the feet to meters converter first and then multiply. Both routes give the same result.
Step by step
- Find the area in square feet (length × width in feet).
- Multiply by 0.09290304.
- Round to one or two decimals; floor plans rarely need more.

Worked examples
A 12 × 12 ft bedroom, a 1,200 sq ft apartment and a 2,500 sq ft house.
144 ft² × 0.09290304 = 13.378038 m²
= 13.378038 m²
1,200 ft² × 0.09290304 = 111.48365 m²
= 111.48365 m²
2,500 ft² × 0.09290304 = 232.2576 m²
= 232.2576 m²
How many square meters is a 2,000 square foot house?
A 2,000 square foot house is 185.81 square meters: 2,000 × 0.09290304 = 185.80608 m².
House sizes are where this conversion matters most, because the headline figure drives price comparisons. Common US house sizes convert like this:
| House size | Square meters |
|---|---|
| 1,000 ft² | 92.9 m² |
| 2,000 ft² | 185.81 m² |
| 2,500 ft² | 232.26 m² |
| 3,000 ft² | 278.71 m² |
| 4,000 ft² | 371.61 m² |
Before comparing homes across countries, check what the number measures. In the US, the ANSI Z765 method measures finished living area to the outside of the exterior walls, while many other markets quote internal floor area measured inside the walls, so the same house can show a smaller metric figure abroad than a straight conversion suggests. Lot sizes are another measure again, usually given in acres; the acres to hectares converter covers those.
How do I convert square feet to square meters in Excel or Google Sheets?
With square feet in A2, =A2*0.09290304 returns exact square meters, and =A2/0.09290304 converts square meters back.
- Named units in Excel:
=CONVERT(A2,"ft2","m2")gives the same result. - From two sides in feet:
=A2*B2*0.09290304multiplies length by width and converts in one step, so a 14 × 18 ft room returns 23.41 m². - With a waste allowance:
=A2*0.09290304*1.1adds 10% for tile or flooring cuts. - Rounded for a listing:
=ROUND(A2*0.09290304,1)shows 1,250 sq ft as 116.1 m². - Square yards as well:
=A2/9turns square feet into square yards, the unit US carpet is often priced in.
If the sides were measured in feet and inches, turn the inches into decimal feet first (inches ÷ 12); typing 14.6 for 14 ft 6 in would overstate that side by 0.1 ft, because 6 in is only 0.5 ft.
What is the difference between square feet and feet square?
Square feet measure area, while “feet square” describes the side of a square: a 2 ft square is 2 ft × 2 ft, which is 4 square feet (0.3716 m²), not 2.
The two phrases agree only at 1, where a 1 ft square is 1 sq ft. After that the gap widens quickly, because area grows with the square of the side.
| Description | Area | Square meters |
|---|---|---|
| 2 ft square | 4 ft² | 0.3716 m² |
| 2 square feet | 2 ft² | 0.1858 m² |
| 10 ft square | 100 ft² | 9.2903 m² |
| 10 square feet | 10 ft² | 0.929 m² |
The labels ft², sq ft and SF all mean square feet. When a quote or a spec says “10 feet square”, read it as a 10 × 10 ft area before you convert anything.

Square feet vs square meters: what is the difference?
Both measure floor and surface area. The square meter is the SI unit, and the square foot is its customary counterpart, defined as the square of an exact 0.3048 m.
| Attribute | Square feet | Square meters |
|---|---|---|
| Symbol | ft² | m² |
| System | Imperial / US | Metric (SI) |
| Defined as | 144 in² (0.09290304 m²) | 1 m² |
| One unit equals | 0.09290304 m² | 10.76391 ft² |
| What it measures | Area of floors, rooms, lots and walls | Area of any surface; the SI derived unit of area |
| Written as | sq ft, ft², or SF on US plans | m², sq m or sqm in listings |
| Where it is used | US and Canadian real estate; UK listings alongside m² | Real estate and building codes in most countries |
| Typical everyday values | 8 × 10 ft rug: 80 ft² | The same rug: 7.43 m² |
4 key differences
- A square meter is 10.7639 times larger than a square foot, so the same floor reads about ten times higher in square feet.
- The factor 0.09290304 is exact because it is 0.3048 squared, while its reciprocal, 10.7639104…, never terminates.
- Doubling the sides of a room quadruples its area in either unit: 10 × 10 ft is 100 ft² (9.29 m²), and 20 × 20 ft is 400 ft² (37.16 m²).
- Converting each side first gives the same answer: an 11 × 13 ft room is 3.3528 × 3.9624 m, which is 13.285135 m², exactly 143 × 0.09290304.
Room sizes in square feet and square meters
US floor plans give room sizes as length × width in feet. Here are common sizes with the floor area in both units and each side in meters.
| Room (ft) | Area (ft²) | Area (m²) | Sides (m) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 × 10 ft | 80 ft² | 7.43 m² | 2.44 × 3.05 m |
| 10 × 10 ft | 100 ft² | 9.29 m² | 3.05 × 3.05 m |
| 10 × 12 ft | 120 ft² | 11.15 m² | 3.05 × 3.66 m |
| 12 × 12 ft | 144 ft² | 13.38 m² | 3.66 × 3.66 m |
| 12 × 14 ft | 168 ft² | 15.61 m² | 3.66 × 4.27 m |
| 12 × 15 ft | 180 ft² | 16.72 m² | 3.66 × 4.57 m |
| 14 × 16 ft | 224 ft² | 20.81 m² | 4.27 × 4.88 m |
| 15 × 20 ft | 300 ft² | 27.87 m² | 4.57 × 6.1 m |
| 20 × 20 ft | 400 ft² | 37.16 m² | 6.1 × 6.1 m |
| 24 × 24 ft | 576 ft² | 53.51 m² | 7.32 × 7.32 m |
Why is a square foot exactly 0.09290304 m²?
A square foot is 0.3048 m × 0.3048 m, which is exactly 0.09290304 m². Area is two lengths multiplied together, so any change of length unit happens twice. Converting feet to meters multiplies a length by 0.3048; converting square feet to square meters multiplies by 0.3048 twice, which is 0.09290304. A cube would need it three times, which is why a cubic foot is 0.0283168 m³.
A quick picture
Picture a square meter on the floor: each side is about 3 ft 3⅜ in. Along each side you could fit 3.28 one-foot tiles, and there are 3.28 rows, so the square holds 3.28 × 3.28 ≈ 10.76 tiles. That is why 1 m² ≈ 10.76 ft², and why one square foot is under a tenth of a square meter.
The same idea inside each system
- 1 ft = 12 in, so 1 ft² = 144 in².
- 1 yd = 3 ft, so 1 yd² = 9 ft².
- 1 m = 100 cm, so 1 m² = 10,000 cm².
Mental math: divide by 10, then take off 7%
0.09290304 is very close to 0.093, which is 0.1 minus 7%. So a quick estimate is: move the decimal one place left, then subtract 7% of that. The error is tiny.
| Square feet | Estimate | Exact | Estimate error |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 ft² | 9.3 m² | 9.29 m² | 0.1% |
| 250 ft² | 23.25 m² | 23.23 m² | 0.1% |
| 500 ft² | 46.5 m² | 46.45 m² | 0.1% |
| 1,000 ft² | 93 m² | 92.9 m² | 0.1% |
| 2,000 ft² | 186 m² | 185.81 m² | 0.1% |
How do you measure a floor for flooring or tile?
Measure each rectangle in feet, multiply length by width, add the pieces, then convert the total and add a waste allowance.
- Measure the length and width of the room in feet, to the nearest inch, and convert inches to decimal feet (7 in = 0.583 ft).
- Split L-shaped or irregular rooms into rectangles, work out each area, and add them.
- Convert the total to square meters here if your materials are sold per m², as they are in most of Europe and Asia.
- Add an allowance for cuts and breakage. Installers commonly add 5–10% for straight layouts and more for diagonal patterns.
Pouring a slab instead of laying tile? Area times thickness gives volume, which the concrete calculator turns into cubic yards and bags.
