How to convert square meters to square feet

How do I work out square feet from measurements in meters?
Multiply the length by the width in meters, then multiply that area by 10.7639: a 3.6 × 4.2 m room is 15.12 m², or 162.75 sq ft.
You can also convert each side to feet first and multiply those. The same room is 11.811 × 13.7795 ft, which again gives 162.75 sq ft, as long as you keep the decimals.
The error to avoid is rounding the sides before multiplying. Rounded to whole feet, the room becomes 12 × 14 ft = 168 sq ft, which is 3.2% too big, and the error grows with every room you add to a total. Round only the final area.
